Evaluation question 3

Question 3: What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

I have chosen to use Future plc. as the company to distribute my magazine. It is a special interest magazine, based in the UK which operates globally. Future sells 3.2 million magazines a month worldwide; they have attracted over 23 million people to their different websites; they host 27 annual events which attract hundreds of thousands of enthusiastic customers. Additionally, they export to 90 different countries, thus making them the highest exporter of monthly magazines in the UK.

The company values, I believe, would suit my magazine. One aim is to offer passion and experience as all of their magazines are specialist. This can be mirrored through my magazine as it is entirely based on listening to music, what people think of music and the people involved in music. The magazine is very passionate about all aspects of the music industry, therefore it would suit Future’s portfolio.

Future does already include a lot of music magazines, however, all of which are slightly different. Magazines such as: Classic Rock, Future Music, Computer Music, Metal Hammer, Rhythm, and many others including some exclusive to the US. On the contrary, none of these publications specify rock and indie music, as well as featuring both up and coming bands and established bands. This is a gap in their portfolio which could be utilised in order to offer a wider range of specialist publications. None of their publications cover indie music at all. Admittedly, there are some that cover rock music but they specify heavier rock or particular instruments. This may be because the music my magazine is reporting is covered by NME and Q as two main competitors- possibly two of the biggest magazines in the UK. But, my magazine covers more unsigned bands than signed, therefore it will appeal to a more niche market which is what Future tries to achieve.

By publishing a publication which specifies another genre of music (Indie, yet to be covered by the company) as well as a broad range of subjects, Future will undoubtedly increase their fan base by attracting young people with an interest in up and coming bands, whilst still supporting the established bands. It claims in their strategy that they “base everything we do on enthusiasts who are passionate about their interests”. Additionally, as the magazine is specialist it is entitled to charge higher as it is a niche product. However, it is a new magazine and with competition like NME and Q, the magazine cannot overprice the magazine as NME and Q are more established and likely to be the chosen option.

To conclude, I believe that Future would be an appropriate institution to publish WOW as it suits the aims of the company. Also, they do not yet have an indie/rock music magazine within their portfolio, so I believe it would complement Future and allow them to  enhance their ever expanding customer base.
